The Workplace Oriented Research Center is a project started by Yonnie Chyung, Ed.D., a professor in the Instructional & Performance Technology department at Boise State University. I was Dr. Chyung’s graduate assistant for the academic year 2011-2012, and as part of my duties I summarized recent research related to some aspect of human performance technology (HPT).
My goal in the spring semester was to find research (preferably based on empirical data) which supported some part of Gilbert’s Behavior Engineering Model. I also looked for research which was peripherally related to the subject of my thesis (evaluation of training interventions).
Summaries of the research articles were posted to the department’s LinkedIn group for discussion. These summaries are posted here as writing samples. Bear in mind that these summaries were written for an audience familiar with HPT from a practitioner viewpoint, but who may not have much background in the disciplines from which HPT draws its expertise. LinkedIn posts are limited to 4000 characters, so these articles were kept short by necessity.
Like my audience, I do not have a formal background in the base disciplines of HPT. Each article required me to do additional research to better understand the topic at hand, so this project has become a crash course in management science, industrial/organizational psychology, and organizational behavior.
